Front Mount vs Side Mount: Choosing the Right Sim Racing Wheelbase Mount
When most people build a sim racing rig, the focus usually goes straight to the wheelbase, pedals, or monitors. But one of the most overlooked parts of the entire setup is the mounting system holding everything together.
As direct drive wheelbases continue to get stronger, wheelbase mounting matters more than ever. A poorly designed mount can introduce flex, limit ergonomics, complicate upgrades, and make an otherwise premium setup feel compromised.
At Focus Sim Racing, we’ve developed multiple wheelbase mounting solutions because different setups and different drivers have different priorities. Some racers want simplicity. Others want modularity and future upgrade flexibility. And some want a dedicated wheelbase-specific mounting solution designed around a flagship setup.
This guide breaks down the four primary wheelbase mounting systems we offer, the benefits of each, and how to decide which one makes the most sense for your rig.
Flat Plate Wheel Deck Mount
A Simple Universal Sim Racing Wheelbase Mount
For many sim racers, a traditional flat plate wheel deck is still one of the easiest and most approachable wheelbase mounting solutions available.
Our Flat Plate Wheel Deck Mount is designed for broad compatibility across multiple wheelbase ecosystems while keeping setup straightforward and cost-effective.
This style of mount works especially well for:
- Entry-level to mid-range direct drive wheelbases
- Sim racers building their first aluminum profile rig
- Users who prioritize simplicity
- Setups where wheelbase changes are less frequent
One of the advantages of a flat plate design is its universal nature. Most wheelbases can be mounted directly to the plate without requiring dedicated side brackets or wheelbase-specific mounting systems.
The tradeoff is ergonomics and adjustment. Height and angle changes are possible, but they typically require loosening multiple chassis mounting points and manually repositioning the wheel deck. On heavier wheelbases, this can be difficult to do alone.
For many setups, though, a flat plate wheel deck remains a reliable and effective solution.
Dedicated Front Mount Systems for Direct Drive Wheelbases

Clean Integration and Wheelbase-Specific Fitment
As direct drive wheelbases become more powerful and more integrated into the overall cockpit design, dedicated front mount systems have become increasingly popular.
Unlike universal wheel decks, dedicated front mounts are designed around specific wheelbase geometries. This creates a cleaner overall appearance, reduces unnecessary adapter stacking, and provides a more integrated wheelbase mounting solution.
At Focus Sim Racing, our dedicated front mount systems are currently available for platforms including MOZA wheelbases and Simucube wheelbases.
All Focus Sim Racing mounting systems are designed around standard 580mm profile spacing specifically for our FSR chassis lineup, while remaining compatible with many other 580mm aluminum profile rigs.
One major advantage of dedicated front mounts is how cleanly they integrate into the cockpit. Compared to a universal wheel deck, front mounts create a more open and professional appearance while maintaining excellent rigidity for high-torque wheelbases.
Our Simucube front mount also includes integrated mounting support for the Simucube 3 control box, helping simplify cable management and overall cockpit organization.
For drivers running anything above roughly 12Nm, front mounting becomes a major step forward in both rigidity and overall driving experience.
Side Mount Pro Modular System

A Professional Sim Racing Side Mount Platform
The Side Mount Pro Modular System is what we consider our professional wheelbase mounting platform.
While rigidity is important, what separates the Side Mount Pro from many traditional sim racing side mounts is ergonomics and long-term flexibility.
One of the biggest problems sim racers run into is wheel position consistency.
You spend hours dialing in your seating position, monitor alignment, pedal spacing, and wheel placement. Then you switch steering wheels and suddenly the wheel sits closer or farther away because of a different shaft depth or wheel geometry.
Most wheelbase mounts make this difficult to correct.
The Side Mount Pro solves this with integrated front-to-back wheelbase adjustment built directly into the mounting system itself.
In addition to tilt adjustment, the Side Mount Pro allows the wheelbase to slide forward or backward independently of the chassis uprights. This makes it dramatically easier to maintain consistent ergonomics across different wheel and wheelbase configurations.
The Modular Edition of the Side Mount Pro also supports interchangeable front mounting plates.
That means:
- You keep the same base side mount structure
- Swap wheelbase-specific plates as needed
- Upgrade wheelbases later without replacing the entire mount
This modular ecosystem is one of the biggest advantages of the platform.
The system is directly compatible with:
- Fanatec DD1 / DD2
- Fanatec CSL DD
And through interchangeable mounting plates, additional wheelbase ecosystems can be supported while maintaining the same core mounting structure.
All Side Mount Pro systems are designed around standard 580mm chassis spacing for our FSR chassis lineup while remaining compatible with many other 580mm profile rigs.
Custom widths are also available upon request for unique rig configurations.
For sim racers who regularly upgrade hardware, or simply want the flexibility to evolve their setup over time, the Side Mount Pro Modular System provides a level of adaptability most fixed mounting systems cannot match.
Dedicated Side Mount Pro Configurations

Wheelbase-Specific Direct Drive Side Mounts
While modularity is important, some wheelbases benefit from dedicated side mounting geometry specifically designed around the wheelbase itself.
That’s where our dedicated Side Mount Pro configurations come in.
These versions are engineered specifically for:
Unlike the Modular Edition, these dedicated variants are direct side mount solutions and are not designed around interchangeable front mounting plates.
Instead, they focus on:
- Dedicated fitment
- Optimized wheelbase geometry
- Cleaner integration
- Improved compatibility with wheelbase-mounted accessories and displays
- Reduced hardware complexity
This becomes especially important on premium wheelbase ecosystems where manufacturers integrate dash displays, top-mounted accessories, or proprietary wheelbase geometry.
Dedicated side mounts allow these systems to integrate more naturally into the cockpit without the compromises sometimes associated with universal adapter-based mounting systems.
For high-end permanent setups, dedicated side mounting often creates the cleanest and most integrated final result.
Front Mount vs Side Mount for Sim Racing
One of the most common questions we get is whether front mounts or side mounts are better for direct drive wheelbases.
The truth is that both can provide excellent rigidity when designed properly. In many cases, the better option comes down to ergonomics, wheelbase ecosystem, and future upgrade plans rather than outright strength.
For many sim racers, dedicated front mounts provide an excellent balance of rigidity, clean integration, and simplified wheelbase installation. They create a very clean cockpit layout while maintaining strong support for higher torque wheelbases.
The Side Mount Pro system approaches the problem differently.
Rather than focusing purely on wheelbase mounting, the Side Mount Pro is designed around long-term ergonomics and modularity. Features like integrated front-to-back adjustment and interchangeable mounting plates make it easier to maintain consistent driving position while evolving the rest of the setup over time.
Dedicated Side Mount Pro configurations for platforms like SIMAGIC EVO and MOZA R21/R25 take this even further by optimizing the mounting geometry around specific wheelbase ecosystems and accessory layouts.
Neither system is universally better. The right choice depends on how you plan to build and evolve your rig over time.
Why Wheelbase Ergonomics Matter

When people discuss sim racing wheelbase mounts, the conversation usually focuses entirely on rigidity.
Rigidity matters. But ergonomics matter just as much.
A wheelbase mount that allows proper tilt adjustment, height adjustment, and front-to-back positioning can dramatically improve comfort, consistency, and long-term usability.
The front-to-back adjustment built into the Side Mount Pro system is one of the most overlooked features in sim racing ergonomics.
Different steering wheels can completely change effective wheel depth. Without an easy way to compensate for that, drivers often end up compromising their ideal seating position every time hardware changes.
Proper ergonomics are not just about comfort. They affect driving consistency, fatigue, and immersion as well.

Final Thoughts
There is no single best sim racing wheelbase mount for every driver.
Different mounting systems solve different problems. Some prioritize simplicity. Some prioritize flexibility. Others prioritize integration and wheelbase-specific geometry.
At Focus Sim Racing, our goal is to build a mounting ecosystem that allows drivers to choose the solution that best fits both their current setup and their future plans.
Because ultimately, the wheelbase mount is more than just a bracket. It’s the foundation of the entire steering experience.
